National - Outram's Garage, Earsdon Road, West Monkseaton, Whitley Bay, North Tyneside mid 1960's

Completely amazing to find this garage still there looking almost exactly the same as it did in 1964 - yes the pumps have gone - probably quite some time ago - but the buildings remain unaltered - lovely to see. One wonders if this photo was posed a little - not only is the AEC tanker driver looking at the camera, so is the other chap with a camera - suggests this was perhaps some occasion being recorded. Inside the garage and just to the left of the pumps a chap smokes a fag as he hands something to a lad working there resplendent in National branded overalls. Far left two other people walk into the garage oblivious to the photo being taken. www.google.com/maps/@55.0376233,-1.471677,3a,75y,275.35h,... Just a few yards down the road (to the right as we view here) is a hand car wash in an old service station so there may well have been a time when there were two petrol stations here within a stone's throw of each other www.google.com/maps/@55.0380369,-1.4724278,3a,75y,259.06h... There's also a little history of the garage on their own website here showing an aerial view of the garage in 1974 - not as good as my photo though! www.outramsgarage.co.uk/history-of-outrams-garage/
