Multiple Brands - Harrisons, 54 Warwick Road, Carlisle, Cumbria later 1930's
So this postcard is essentially a flier for a local architect, building company and brick supplier - the garage is largely incidental! It's a great photo of a brand new 1930's service station and a well taken photo where one can see right into the middle of the premises. On sale are Redline, Shell, Esso and National Benzole and whereas the pump globes for Redline and National Benzole are as expected the Shell and Esso ones are slightly more unusual, the Esso before they adopted the oval ones and the Shell before they adopted the contoured shell shaped ones. That dates this photo to 1935 or later as only then did Pratts become Esso but because of the unusual Esso pump globe I'd guess this is probably almost exactly 1935 or maybe 1936. Higher up to the right is a sign advertising Rover cars so presume they were a Rover dealer too. The fact it claims to be open day and night helped me to identify the location - it was listed in my RAC all night petrol stations brochure of 1963 which gives the address as Cecil Street. A quick look up and down Cecil Street doesn't show anything like this still standing although there is a building - a church in fact - similar to the one next to the garage if not identical but I can rule that out. Turns out it was in Warwick Road which joins Cecil Street. I would guess this might have been seen as being a bit of a monstrosity in the 1930's! www.google.com/maps/@54.8931406,-2.9305808,3a,75y,310.75h...
