Esso - Hartdene Service Station, London Road, Bagshot, Surrey 1970's
Apparently the chequered design is to aid motorists to locate the site entrance at night-time - the said areas being illuminated by the floodlights at each end of the site. I think this was more due to the poor quality of car headlamps in those days than any other factor - visibility from older cars was also poorer than it is today. It's not an idea that I really remember catching on. Everything else in the photo is perfect period Esso - the mini pump island canopies, the style of the building and Esso oil cabinets between the pumps. Add to that the sign for Green Shield Stamps and an offer for free smoky glasses as well as the standard white fencing and we have a great period picture.
