Shell - Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland 1960
Situated where the A839 meets the A836 at Lairg, this Shell garage disappeared at some point leaving only parts of the footprint of the site still showing. Behind it is the impressive Loch Shin Dam - a hydro-electric power scheme constructed as far back as the 1950's when the level of the water was artificially raised by I think at least ten metres on the far side. The photo here captures the dam far better than any view on Google Streetview manages. This postcard was sent with a date of 16th August 1962 so dates the photo to be either right at the start of the swinging sixties, or just before in the late 1950's www.google.co.uk/maps/@58.0241646,-4.4013826,3a,37.5y,310...
