Here's a close up view of the Esso pumps at Pike's garage in Shaftesbury. Esso Golden, Extra and Mixture available as well as a fourth pump which is unlabelled, presumably their regular octane petrol. I would guess that Extra was the equivalent of four star, Golden Five star and Mixture three star with the unlabelled pump as two star. For the general view see below.
