Multiple Brands - JJ Cookson, Central Motor Garage, Sunderland Street, Waters Green, Macclesfield 1930's
This is the 700th photo in this category (vintage garages) that I have uploaded and I wanted it to be a really good one! This one is a superb picture showing St Michael and All Angels Church high up on a hill with several businesses in view. On the far right we have the Nag's Head pub, more central the Oldmill Stone Hotel and to the left JJ Cookson's Central Motor Garage selling National Benzole and Pratt's Petroleum, higher up on the wall BP is another brand advertised. What is completely astonishing to me is that both the Nag's Head and JJ Cookson's garage both exist under those names today with the garage now modernised and a Peugeot dealer. Indeed JJ Cookson's garage was established in 1911 and therefore is celebrating 108 years in business this year - a truly amazing achievement. I am annoyed with both the cyclist for obscuring the pumps on display outside the garage and with the photographer who pressed at just the wrong time! However even with this slight imperfection (from my point of view) there is still plenty to appreciate. A nice array of now vintage cars of the era and the man carrying the single wheel is looking almost with jealousy at the one riding the bike as if thinking "one day that'll be me". There is also a traditional market taking place central to the shot perhaps suggesting this photo was taken on a Saturday. The lone young lad walking casually front left also suggests this was not a school day. At the very far left there is a fine looking bus of the era. The view of the church is magnificent and much better than today's view although one has to be appreciative that the view today is less good because so many trees have grown since this photo was taken - and that's surely a good thing - I would perhaps have expected it to be the other way round. Here's the same view today - lots more trees but the garage under the same name and the Nag's Head looking virtually identical to the 1930's shot above. www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.2593314,-2.1230216,3a,75y,313.0...
