Jet - Beauchief Garage, Sheffield, South Yorkshire 1960

Clearly the tram takes centre stage but the Jet garage to the left is what interests me! I've found what is actually a better picture of the garage here when now branded Regent in 1964 www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_inc... The same location today is heavily developed and its hard to see exactly where the garage was but there is a large building called The Beauchief in shot. It is suggested that it was where the new flats are running around the corner of the junction. A contributor to a thread on the subject of this very garage on the Sheffield Forum writes "The original Beauchief Garage was situated on Abbeydale Road itself, next to which was the Post Office on the corner with Abbey Lane. The garage also boasted a car hire business and Funeral service both of which were housed in buildings reached via a driveway just behind the Post office on Abbey Lane itself. On the opposite side of Abbey Lane just behind the Beauchief Hotel was the depot for a coaching business owned by the garage by a man called George Gill. This was called Abbey Lane Motor Services (Beauchief Coaches) and was established in December 1930. This enterprise was taken over by Sheffield United Tours on 20th May, 1953. I believe the Post office was closed on this corner in the sixties and flattened to make way for a new Filling station. This itself was then demolished around 2001/2 to make way for the present flats complex." www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.3360415,-1.5102203,3a,75y,106.9...
