Shell - Marshalsea Brothers Garage, Market Square, Ilminster, Somerset 1950s

This is from an area I'm pretty familiar with as my family's roots are just down the road from here in Crewkerne. This postcard has been tinted fairly heavily but there is still plenty to enjoy. Of particular interest to me is the large "Petrol" sign - still at the transition to solus agreements - and planning permission would have to be granted for a Shell sign to appear in the early 1950's. The Morris Minor parked outside the garage which deals in Morris cars is a nice touch. I'm too young to recognise some of the other cars here but the one side on looks like an extended Morris Traveller - did such a thing ever exist? Marshalsea Brothers had a number of garages in this area extending up to Taunton. Here's the same view today - a tree appears mid picture rather obscuring the detail but the garage is now a Co-operative supermarket with the original building probably demolished and a new two storey building in its place. www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.9267454,-2.9094106,3a,37.5y,284...
