Hand Car Wash, North Street, Crewkerne, Somerset
Wouldn't normally post a Hand Car Wash garage but this one has special significance for me - even if I am rather sad it now looks like this. Back in the late 1960's and early 1970's this was a Cleveland branded garage before all Cleveland sites were rebranded to Esso - Esso already owned Cleveland but had kept it as a secondary brand for around fifteen years. By the 1990's many smaller fuel stations were closing and this one had its last heyday as an independent - but even then it was looking run down as you can see in my picture below from 1999. This shot shows the end of North Street, Crewkerne furthest from town and is a very familiar sight to me as what was once my grandmother's house was just behind me as I took this photo. It seems such a distant memory as a kid popping over the road to spend 10p on sweets when it was a thriving garage and looking very smart as an Esso.
