Cover of pocket timetable for train services Edinburgh/Fife/Dundee 1989 (inc the first "Fife Circle" services.)

Pocket timetable for the busy train services from Edinburgh to Fife and Dundee. The last branch lines in Fife - to St Andrews, Newport upon Tay and Leven - had all closed in 1969 leaving just the main line via Kirkcaldy and the Dunfermline loop line. Most trains to Dunfermline terminated at Cowdenbeath with only a few serving Lochgelly and Cardenden. In 1989, BR had been persuaded that it would be a good idea to link up the local trains from Edinburgh terminating at Kirkcaldy with those from Edinburgh terminating at Cowdenbeath or Cardenden and thus Fife Circle services in both directions were established. This is the first timetable for that service. Note also the use of the ScotRail brand, first introduced in 1983. Today, Glenrothes with Thornton station is the furthest point from Edinburgh on the Fife Circle train service but that station did not open until 1992. All these train services from Edinburgh cross the Forth Bridge (opened 1890). The original main line through Fife (Burntisland to Tayport) opened 1847 with Thornton to Dunfermline opening 1849.
