Sullivan's Island Lighthouse

Charleston, South Carolina

This 140-foot triangular lighthouse is situated near Fort Moultrie, a Civil War era fort that was named for Revolutionary War hero William Moultrie, who repelled an armada of British troops on June 28, 1776. It also sits adjacent to a former U.S. Lifesaving Station that was in service from 1894 until the 1980's.

First activated on 15 June 1962, the tower was the last major lighthouse built by the U.S. government. It sits at the north end of Charleston Harbor and was built to replace the Morris Island lighthouse that was being threatened by erosion. It's unique shape allows it to withstand powerful hurricane winds that sometimes batter the South Carolina coast.
