7000 Years

Near Benham Falls in Oregon, sparsely vegetated basalt rock deposited during volcanic eruptions 7000 years ago lines one side the Deschutes River. The other side, untouched by recent lava, is richly forested, creating a landscape of remarkable contrast and beauty.

Deschutes National Forest. Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Near Bend, Oregon.
