Big boys’ toys
Festiniog Railway, Porthmadog, North Wales
Since my time working as a volunteer on the ‘deviation’ line to reconnect the Festiniog line to Blaenau Ffestiniog in the 1980s, I’ve hardly been back down to visit.
Now the Welsh Highland Railway is also connected here at Porthmadog. It’s now possible to catch a stream train from behind the castle at Caernarfon all the way to Porthmadog and change for another steam train on the Festiniog all the way to Blaenau. This must make the overall trip one of the longest preservation steam lines anywhere, if not the world… and I’ve yet to do it myself.
Here’s one of the WHR locos on it’s way to take on water at the FR’s terminus at Porthmadog.
