The Old Water Mill of Borrowdale (Explore 19/10/20 #11)

Borrowdale, Lake District

The whole purpose of our visit to the lakes was to photograph this little known and well-hidden water mill located somewhere between Rosthwaite and Seatoller in the Borrowdale valley. Having said that, it’s probably been photographed as much as the lone tree of Llyn Padarn by now!

It’s not that far a walk from the National Trust car park at Seatoller and wellies aren't the best footwear for the road-side bit, however, they come into their own if you have to cross the stream to shoot from the opposite side of the water mill as we did. At least 3 of our 4-man team made the right choice, but then again, he’s not called Muddyboots for nothing, but more like Soggyboots that day!

When we arrived, the weather wasn’t playing ball and insisted on giving us all a good soaking. As luck would have it, our latest recruit Mike Tonge... “The Caddy” had brought a couple of golfing umbrellas with him. I remember them all laughing at me when I recanted the tale of “The Return to Clutchgate” and trying to take shots while holding an umbrella in the midst of Storm Callum a few years back... but not today!

Working in pairs and shielding our cameras with the umbrellas we all managed to get plenty of good shots while it pi$$ed down and surprisingly very few spoilt by rain spots. We were on the verge of packing up when the sun broke through and started to light up the stream in the direction of the water mill. What else could we do, but unpack and shoot again... well it would have been rude not to! All this took place nearly a fortnight ago and I’ve haven’t seen an image from our merry band so here’s mine!

I did contemplate captioning it - Beyond Thunderdome... four men visit, one man uploads, but that will be lost on most!
