Mixed Martial Arts-Modern Fighting With an Ancient History

via WordPress ift.tt/1D8nM1a

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, was made extremely popular with the beginning of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993. In the early days of UFC, there were minimal safety rules, and it opened the doors for competitors of different fighting styles to compete with each other. The goal was to determine the ultimate existing fighting style, but it has evolved into its own form of competition, competing with boxing for pay per view ratings. The term, Mixed Martial Arts, is new, being first used by Jeff Blatnick, a Greco-Roman wrestler and Olympic gold medalist. The term was used to describe the events of UFC as he assisted in developing its safety rules. However, the idea behind MMA has a much more ancient history.MMA as a concept could be said to predate history, or even the existence of the human race. After all, even apes fight bare-handed. The first recorded accounts of what could be more specifically called MMA were in 648 BC. Then called Pankration, it was a no-holds-barred style of fighting introduced into the Olympic Games in that year. This went on to inspire the even more brutal and potentially lethal Etruscan and Roman Pancratium styles. In Roman times, Pancratium was featured at the Coliseum. It grew in popularity even into the Early Middle Ages. There are statues in various cities from that time honoring popular Pancratium fighters. This concept of minimalism in rules and variety of styles continued on into the modern days, leading to the founding of the UFC and PRIDE. These particular minglings of fighting styles and the sharing of information caused a great evolution in martial arts. Techniques that didn’t work were dismissed, while those that did were emphasized. This inspired a whole generation of more pragmatic fighting schools. The difficulty most people would have with using MMA for self defense is that it requires a lot of training and a lot of time sweating in the gym. The next evolution in self defense would dispense with all of these, leaving a style that requires minimal training and minimal time spent in exercise.
