Gold mining on the Tambopata river
A rather sad thing to see. A number of gold mining rigs were seen on the river bank. These use a pump to carry silt and river bed gravel across a filter beds. The gold binds to mercury which is then boiled off by heating to concentrate the gold. Tons of mercury are used every year causing major pollution within the unprotected regions.
