Papayer Colombo ("Carica papaya")
Le papayer est un arbre fruitier de la famille des caricacées, originaire d'Amérique tropicale, d'une hauteur d'environ 2,50m en moyenne (mais il peut monter beaucoup plus haut comme celui qui est photographié ici), à feuillage découpé, à floraison blanche et portant des fruits (les papayes) de la taille d'un gros concombre fixés en haut du tronc. Il se consomment vert en salade ou mûrs en fruit. Seuls les pieds femelles portent les fruits. Dans son milieu naturel, la fructification intervient six mois après semis.
The papaya tree is a fruit tree of the Caricaceae family, native to tropical America, with an average height of about 2.50m (but it can grow much higher like the one pictured here), with cut foliage, white flowers and bearing fruits (papayas) the size of a large cucumber attached to the top of the trunk. They are eaten green in salad or ripe as fruit. Only the female plants bear fruit. In its natural environment, fruiting occurs six months after sowing.
