"The Nereid Monument"
Au début des années 1840, Charles Fellows, voyageur et antiquaire, dirigea deux expéditions en Lycie (sud-ouest de la Turquie). Il obtint du sultan ottoman de Constantinople (Istanbul) l'autorisation de procéder à des fouilles à Xanthos. Le monument aux Néréides était en ruines lorsque Fellows le découvrit. Une fois le "fiman" (permis) obtenu, Fellows commença à fouiller et à retirer ce qu'il avait trouvé avec le financement du British Museum. Il bénéficia de l'aide experte de marins de la Royal Navy pour déplacer et transporter les lourdes sculptures en pierre et les pièces architecturales qui furent flottées sur des radeaux sur la rivière Xanthos jusqu'au navire HMS Beacon. Ce dernier transporta les découvertes à Malte avant qu'elles ne soient expédiées en Grande-Bretagne.
In the early 1840s, Charles Fellows, a traveller and antiquary, led two expeditions to Lycia (southwestern Turkey). He obtained the permission of the Ottoman Sultante of Constantinople (Istanbul), to excavate at Xanthos. The Nereid Mobument lay in ruins when Fellows discovered it. Once a fiman (permit) had been secured, Fellows began to excavate and remove what he found, with funding from the British Museum. Fellows had the expert assistance of sailors from the Royal Navy to move and transport the heavy stone sculptures and architectural pieces, which were floated on rafts down the river Xanthos to the ship HMS Beacon. This transported the finds to Malta, before they wer shipped onwards to Britain.
