Le cap Jaune
Le cap Jaune doit son nom à la couleur remarquable des hyaloclastites qui constituent sa falaise d'environ cinquante mètres de haut, qui tire donc sur le jaune et tranche avec les teintes sombres des autres formations volcaniques environnantes, ce qui en fait une curiosité de la géologie réunionnaise. Les hyaloclastites sont des roches volcaniques issues du refroidissement explosif d'une lave au contact de l'eau puis de la consolidation des éclats. Elles se forment lorsque des éruptions volcaniques se produisent sous l'eau à faible profondeur ou lorsque des coulées de lave se déversent dans la mer. La fragmentation se produit par la force de l'explosion volcanique ou par choc thermique. Ce sont des roches poreuses et tendres appartenant à la catégorie des tufs.
Cape Yellow owes its name to the remarkable color of the hyaloclastites which constitute its cliff of about fifty meters high, which therefore turns yellow and contrasts with the dark hues of the other surrounding volcanic formations, which makes it a curiosity of the Reunion geology. Hyaloclastites are volcanic rocks resulting from the explosive cooling of a lava in contact with water and then from the consolidation of the fragments. They form when volcanic eruptions occur underwater at shallow depths or when lava flows pour into the sea. Fragmentation occurs by the force of the volcanic explosion or by thermal shock. They are porous and tender rocks belonging to the category of tuffs.
