Minaret rising from water
The construction of the Birecik dam across the Euphrates River in southern Turkey resulted in the flooding of many ancient sites in 1999. Parts of these villages that were above the flooding line are now accessible by boat and have become tourist attractions. When a mosque in Eski Halfeti was submerged, its minaret remained standing above the water line.
