Gilded bas relief, Wat Mai temple
The magnificent gilded bas relief at Wat Mai Buddhist temple dates from the remodeling of the temple during late 1960s. The reliefs were first covered with a black lacquer and then gilded. It depicts scenes from the Ramayana, one of the largest ancient epics in world literature, the Vessantara-Jakata, an important part of the traditional folklore or the region, and the Buddha's penultimate reincarnation. At the bottom the relief contain the villages and flora and fauna of the world around Luang Prabang (best larger).
