Megan Cleary "An Expressive Wall"

Megan Cleary, DO, PGY3 Resident - Psychiatry

Medium: various! Almost all of my materials come from ScrapsKC, thrift or dollar stores. Macramé is composed of various strings, yarns and ropes, and I've used some sticks from my front yard for some of the macramé pieces as well. The panels are wooden with acrylic paint. String art is composed of various strings and threads, nails and scrap wood. I also use mirrors, nails and glitter. The &"stained glass" piece was created with washable Crayola glass crayons and masking tape. The cat picture was done with watercolor paint.

Artist statement:

Psychiatry is unique in that so often the wounds my patients share with me are not visible to the naked eye. Outwardly the body appears intact, but internally the mind feels chaotic, erratic, disorganized. My wooden panel pieces were created with this sentiment in mind: to embody a controlled sense of chaos- a chaos that can be unpredictable but also pleasantly surprising, and beautiful despite the wounds it was borne from. A reminder that there is always hope.

"Practice any art, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what's inside you, to make your soul grow."- Kurt Vonnegut
