KU Medical Center
Ralphie in the Garden
Artist: Rusha Bajpai, 4th Year Med Student
Category: Color Pencil on Sandpaper. The grit of the sandpaper absorbs the pigment of the pencil much better. I also go over my pencil strokes with oil-based paint thinner, which gives it a sort of pastel texture.
Artist Statement on the theme Transformed and Transcended:
I spent almost all of my third year of medical school creating this piece. With the stress of clinical rotations, exams and Covid, drawing is something I would look forward to doing in my minimal free time. I dedicated a few hours each week to creating this piece. I would listen to my favorite music on my headphones, tune out the world and just focus on my art. Instead of letting the feelings of fear and stress consume me, I channeled my energy into creating something beautiful for my family. Overall, I think this piece represents choosing hope and happiness in difficult times.
