Bonsai Tree

Artist: Angela Li, M.D. candidate, class of 2023

Category: Physical media

The inspiration for this piece came from a YouTube video I watched of an artist who created his very own wire bonsai tree and I thought to myself, "I have wire and pliers, and I have a lot of time--I can make this!" The process was simple and a little tedious, but I loved being able to manipulate metal again--I sorely missed being in the metalsmithing studio and creating 3D pieces. To make my wire bonsai tree, I had to do some research about real bonsai trees, specifically about the shapes and the different ways to cultivate them; I chose to "cultivate" my tree in an informal upright shape. Materials: aluminum wire, moss, ceramic, sculpting clay.
