KU Medical Center
Chairs and coffee table
Artist: Richard Dubinsky, MD, MPH, Professor and former Residency Program Director, Dept. of Neurology
Category: Wood Working (cherry, hickory and persimmon)
This table and chairs are my interpretation of a design by the late George Nakashima. First made when he was in an internment camp during WWII and refined through the 1960s, the design is timeless. In these uncertain times I often think as to how ephemeral our lives are. I strive to make furniture that will last 200 years or more. Long after my papers are no longer read and the patients who I have treated are no more, these objects will be part of someone’s life, still used and enjoyed. What better legacy can one strive for?
