Aiming for the Night
Above the clouds at an altitude of 2400m during evening twilight "blue hour" at the Observatorio Roque de Los Muchachos on the island of La Palma in the Canaries. The Calima phenomenon (dust-laden air from the Sahara) as well as airglow contributed to the brilliant atmospheric hues. Several of the fifteen telescopes can be seen silhouetted in the foreground on Fuente Nueva ridge as they prepare for a night's work, including the William Herschel Telescope with it's laser guide. A faint meteor can be seen at upper left.
