However, let it be known that Africatown community members are far from victims. Rather, during my time in Africatown, I had the incredible opportunity to witness a robust and intimate community of historically aware and politically engaged citizens. The people whom I interacted with had the ability to situate themselves within their history while engaging with current socioeconomic challenges, as well as carrying with them an internalized vision for Africantown’s potential future as a prosperous town. The ability to vacillate between these spheres cannot be understated. Africatown community members offer an unprecedented challenge of ongoing industrial hegemony in the “Chemical Corridor of the East Coast.” I cannot reiterate enough how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to be of help and form the intimate relationships that I did over the span of just a few days. I sincerely hope to return as soon as possible and continue to engage in Africatown’s ongoing crusade in any way that I can prove useful.
