Buchenwald
Die "Nationale Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Buchenwald" wurde von der DDR 1958 errichtet. Ihre Monumentalität verdankt sie wohl nicht nur ihrer Rolle als Erinnerung an die NS-Verbrechen. Vielmehr diente sie als Nationaldenkmal, im Zentrum stehen die deutschen kommunistischen Wiederstandskämpfer. Mit deren Geschichte sollte der Führungsanspruch der SED legitimiert werden.
The national memorial "Buchenwald" was erected in the year 1958 by the GDR. Its monumentality is not only thanks to its role as a reminder of NS-crimes but more so due to its role as a national monument. Its focus lies on the communistic resistance fighters. Their history was meant to legalize the claim to leadership of the SED.
