Walking to Church by Takács István
The best layed plans often go awry. Today, we were planning to drive to the nearby town of Eger to enjoy the Turkish bath, but we had some car trouble, so we ended up spending the morning walking around Mezokovesd while the car was being repaired.
We spent the morning at the Takács István Museum. Takács István was a famous local artist who was known for his paintings of life in rural Hungary, as well as religious scenes. He has also been known to combine the two, sometimes depicting religious figures in traditional Hungarian costumes.
This painting shows a groupd of women walking arm in arm to church on Sunday, dressed in their brightly coloured, embroidered clothes. The women with unveiled heads are the young single ladies, while the ones wearing veils are new mothers.
