Embroidered Elegance
This is a VINTAGE Japanese Taikogara Fukuro Obi. Fukuro Obi are semi-formal belts worn with kimono. They are characterised by being only partly patterned, and in the case of Taikogara fukuro obi, they are only patterned on specific portions that will be visible when tied in an otaiko musubi (drum knot). Fukuro obi are usually worn with houmongi or furisode kimono. This obi likely originates in the Showa Period (1926 - 1989). This obi has beautiful, and elegantly embroidered pattern of flower roundels. The roundels feature cherry blossoms, peonies, wisteria, clematis and orange blossoms on a cream coloured, rinzu silk background.
I have inspected this obi in detail, and there some damage. There is a prominent fold line along the centre for part of the obi's length. Some of the kinkoma embroidery is also coming loose, but this can be repaired with a few stitches. There is also a very prominent stain on one of the sections that will likely be hidden when worn. Overall I would rate this obi as being in good vintage condition. I believe this garment is 100% silk.
