Lady Med: The Triumph of Science over Death
Crafted by the country's national hero Jose Rizal, the sculpture "The Triumph of Science over Death" (also known as Scientia) presents a naked woman with flowing hair standing on top of a skull and holding a torch.
What stands in front of the Calderon Hall of the UP College of Medicine (UPCM) is a large replica of the original Scientia which is housed at the Rizal Shrine Museum in Intramuros, Manila.
Lady Med, as it is more commonly known, symbolizes the power of science in bringing about change beneficial to mankind. This places a heavy duty on scientists to be more responsible and extra wary in their practice.
In celebration of womanhood and Rizal's work, the UPCM Student Council annually holds an advocacy-driven inter-class competition "Lady Med" wherein male medical students transform into damsels to represent, not only class spirit, but each's chosen beneficiaries. This event allows med students and other UP Manila students to unwind and escape from academic hell.
