DSC01499_DIY_IR_Silicon_Filter

Many modern Flip Chip CPUs are transparent as glass in the near and medium infrared range and allow with the right equipment a closer look inside the chip without any damage.

Mono crystalline and uncoated silicon allow pass the light over 1200nm and give a max. transmission of the light at 1500nm - 6000nm. Old Flip Chip CPUs are a great and cheap source for a IR filter. Remove a chip from package and sanding all layers down to the silicon and polishing it (alternate: etching with glass etching cream a old SOI based AMD Athlon 64, Phantom or Bulldozer CPU and get the same result).

Second part you need is a full spectrum converted camera with a macro lens and a filter adapter (there are tons of "full spectrum conversion" web-tutorials, google can help).

Third part, is just a near infrared light source (classic infrared heat lamp)
