Salzburg, Fortress Hohensalzburg

Hohensalzburg Castle is a fortress in Salzburg, Austria. The castle is 250 metres long with a width of 150 metres and is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Construction on the castle began in 1077 and the ring walls and towers were only completed in 1462.

 

Salzburg (literally Salt Fortress) is the fourth largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. The Altstadt (Old Town) of Salzburg is well known for its baroque architecture and is one of the best preserved city centres which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Parts of the city were used for The Sound of Music play and film.
