Melting snow in crossed polarized light

Ran out of fresh snowflakes so decided to take a close look at some old stuff.

Recently I've been so possessed trying to capture singular, delicate crystals I totally overlooked the piles of old stuff hanging around.

This image, with the exception of a smidge of color tweaking, is for the most part unadulterated. It was taken under crossed polarized light and consists of about a 1/4 teaspoon of old snow slowly melting upon a glass slide.
