Class 322 EMU
by DesiroDan
Identical to the Class 321, the Class 322's were originally built for the Stansted Express services under the Stansted Skytrain brand. After being replaced by converted Class 317/7 units they operated on other West Anglia Great Northern services at the time including services between London Kings Cross and Peterborough.
Two units were briefly used on the short lived direct London Euston to Manchester Airport workings operated by North Western Trains. The fleet were also borrowed by Silverlink on their London - Birmingham route and also Anglia Railways London - Norwich services to cover for the late arrival of their new Turbostar units.
Following their use on the Great Eastern Main Line during the Ipswich Tunnel blockade all five units returned to Scotrail for use primarily on the North Berwick branch. This was not the first time they had been used in Scotland.
After being overhauled and later on superseded by Class 380 Desiro units the whole fleet this time went to Northern Rail. Northern used them on services from Leeds to Doncaster, Bradford Forster Square, Skipton and Ilkley. This continued until new Class 331 Civity units arrived on the scene.
Incredibily, the Class 322's would return to the Anglia region once again this time bringing the three Class 321/9 units with them. The reason for this was that the Class 360/1 Desiro units transferred to East Midlands Railway. Thanks to being fully PRM compliant they will remain in use with Greater Anglia until their full fleet of Class 720 Aventra units are in traffic.
