Twilight at Bromo

Getting to Bromo is a challenge, which is an understatement of sorts. Before you board the bus, many people will try to broker you tickets that you can buy directly on board, basically guys that make a living on ripping people off. You board a bus in Surabaya for a very long journey down to another bus station where you can transfer to public bus which will only depart once the public bus in completely full, there are no timelines. Hawkers and musicians with small guitars get on and off regularly screaming songs at you and selling all sorts of fish flavored snacks.

Once you arrive at the public bus station, you'll encounter any number of people trying to rip you off. You can just pay $10 to a motorbike to have one hell of a ride up the mountain, which is exactly what I did. I purchased a tour which cost me maybe $35 and included a park ticket I'd later find out was completely unnecessary. Although for the price having a jeep drive me to the summit of the lookout in the AM was worth it anyway.

This view is actually a seldom seen view of bromo as it requires effort. Hiking up the mountain side opposite and in the middle of the night hiking down. It's actually incredibly steep, and not an easy climb. I ate dinner in a small village that night as I left town with no food and didn't realize how far it was. A local farmer lady and older man showed me incredible hospitality and fed me some of their amazing Indonesian food. This shot is from just after the sunset during twilight hour, and brought some of the best light for me to Bromo of my entire experience there.
