Harper Pass

Harper's Pass is located on the Te Aurora near Arthur's Pass. Before Arthur's Pass was built in the old days, Harper's Pass was one of the easier routes from New Zealand's eastern region to the treacherous west. The east and west are divided by mountains, and in these mountains even in summer the weather changes at the drop of a dime. There is a cabin not far from here, but we decided to stay near the pass this night as the area was beautiful and serene.

I spent a good portion of this night doing astro photography, and trying to capture the glow worms on the cliffs beside this river. This is much harder than you can imagine as the glow worms are in thick brush, and unlike a cave, there are many things that block and cloud your view. The stars were brilliant here as there is no noise pollution, or even airplanes to disturb you. It's one of those places in the world where you can still feel surrounded by nature without the feeling of seeing much if any human influences.
