Salty

A rare weekend run of GEXR 581 offered the opportunity to photograph two of my hobbies at the same time in Goderich. Here the crew is serving their bread and butter; the Sifto salt mine. The salt mine in Goderich is the largest underground salt mine in the world and sprawls under Lake Huron. The majority of the salt is shipped out by ship, but a decent amount is also shipped by rail. In the off season, Goderich is a preferred winter layup location for Great Lakes ships. The Algoma Guardian can be seen here still in layup.

Train: GEXR 581 with HESR 3510 (GP38-2) and RLHH 2111 (GP38-2).
