OfficeMax No More
WEEK 45 – Union Avenue OfficeMax, Set I
This shot shows the other side of the roadside sign for OfficeMax (with the Danver’s-shaped Cook Out sign also visible in the background). I’m not sure which side is worse and which is better, but they’ve definitely both become rather sun-worn over the years, that yellow background behind the OfficeMax logo looking very faded here in 2020.
Speaking of 2020 – I should mention that it was not long after my visit, about late February of 2021, that it was announced Gordon Food Service would be bringing a new grocery store to Midtown by opening up in the former OfficeMax location on Union. The trouble is, OfficeMax was not “former” yet: it was still very much operational, and moreover had not announced any plans to cease operating here. Obviously the news was trustworthy, given that GFS had already submitted documents to the Board of Adjustment; and also obviously, it’s not difficult at all to believe that OfficeMax would have any problem closing a store if another prospective tenant approached them wanting to take over the building, the way the Office DepotMax company has been closing stores left and right in recent years. At that point it simply became a waiting game as to when this store would suddenly decide to liquidate and close, and apparently that happened very, very quietly this fall, with a pair of images posted to Google Maps in mid-October being my first and only alert that the closing sale must finally have begun. Less than a week later, the store was marked as permanently closed, meaning it must have shut its doors for the final time sometime between October 16th and 23rd, 2021. (cont.)

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
