Coffee Mermaid, Hidden Wheat

WEEK 38 – Goodman/Getwell Kroger, Revisited (I)

In 2017, this store received the second of two renovations that were minor in scope but, I’d argue, fairly major in importance. As you can see in the above image, that would be the addition of a brand-new in-store Starbucks Coffee counter. This was installed in the front right corner of the building, occupying space that once upon a time had been home to a self-serve beverage machine. That machine was later moved within the café space, eating up some of the seating there.

Above the Starbucks counter, a new bulkhead was built, extending the drop ceiling that (we just saw) already runs above the café space. What was cool about that, I thought, is that the existing wall – now hidden behind the new bulkhead – was not painted before it was hidden away. As such, if you look closely in this photo (see also my photo note), you can see some of those bountiful décor wheat stalk stencils that continue to survive, buried away behind the new bulkhead and drop ceiling. It’s nice to know that at least a tiny portion of the 2012 décor won’t be touched in this remodel, and has the potential to be rediscovered years down the line, if and when some other major renovation begins to unearth this area!

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
