Pop-Up Weather Image, 2015

Today’s Action News 5 collage is a little different than the previous two: namely, as you can surely see, those aren’t actual photos of real subjects! Rather, these are all screenshots from a commercial the station aired in either late 2014 or early 2015 promoting its weather team. I believe this wasn’t long after they became “WMC Action News 5,” complete with a new logo which had only recently debuted at the time – and which necessitated the reworking of the StormTrack Doppler 5 logo alongside it (see the bottom right of each of the stills for that). Formerly it was white like the old Action News 5 logo; it would be replaced entirely by Raycom Media’s (WMC’s parent company) mandated “First Alert Weather” branding later, but only after Chief Meteorologist Dave Brown retired.

And on that topic, be sure to note how, in the shots of the weather team, Dave is strategically placed behind Ron Childers, who would become his successor! Also present are Spencer Denton, Andrew Kozak, and Tim Van Horn; Brittney Bryant hadn’t been hired yet, but would be soon: Tim left not long after this promo debuted. Interestingly enough, after he left the station continued to use this promo for a little while, but with him edited out! I suspect they knew that development was coming however, based on how much he looks like a “fifth wheel,” so to speak, in the group shot at the end (above the longtime “We Track Storms” slogan, also retired with Dave’s departure).

Discussion of the weather team isn’t my main point by uploading these promo stills, though – rather, my goal here was to tie this in to our “studio talk” this week! While the commercial begins with two shots of “Memphis” under various weather conditions, a major portion of it is dedicated to the WMC Action News 5 Storm Tracking Team in their “natural habitat” – the now-former news set! This just goes to show you how much the set became a significant part of their branding over the years since its installation in 2006. There’s super attention to detail in the ad’s rendering of the studio too, which – combined with the awesome, creative, whimsical pop-up-book theme of the commercial – makes this just about my favorite promo of all time!

Short description tonight… I know y’all likely don’t care about this stuff anyway, so the rest of my observations I’ll just share in the photo notes :P Do please do yourself a favor and watch the ad in full, though: like I said, it’s very well-made! Click here to do that. And stick around for tomorrow, too – that’s when I’ll upload my collage of the new set!
