German Pretzels

I come from a long line of ancestors who arrived from Germany in the early 1700's. We finally had the chance to host a German themed dinner party in January. I could not resist making German pretzels. True German pretzels are dipped in a "foodsafe" lye solution prior to baking. Unfortunately such an item is not stocked at Canadian Safeways. We made do with a completely inferior baking soda solution. In desperation, I was tempted to experiment with shavings from a bar of lye soap that I picked up in Mexico. While it does an awesome job on ring around the collar and other stubborn stains I did not think it wise to experiment with the dinner party pretzels. Of course the lye soap is also not stocked on Canadian Safeway shelves.
