45406 on Shed at Colwick
Despite its decrepit appearance, Black 5 4-6-0 No.45406 is actually in steam here during Charlie's visit as part of a railfan's group in April 1966, to 16B Colwick depot. I really love this image, conveying the sense of excitement and anticipation upon approaching a steam motive power depot, wondering what might be in residence at the time. The grime and the general neglect just add to the atmosphere here. The crane (steam?) appears to be retrieving coal from the tenders of withdrawn locomotives and transferring it to a 16 ton wagon. 45406 was allocated to Colwick until December 1965, when it moved the short distance to 16E Kirkby in Ashfield shed. Transferred again to 8C Speke Junction in January 1967, it was withdrawn from service by the July and despatched for scrap at Cashmore's, Great Bridge, by the end of the year.
