4-BUF on a Suburban Service
4-BUF 'Nelson' unit No.3077 had just been displaced from 'front line' services on the Pompey line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth. Rather unusually this unit was temporarily deployed on suburban Guildford to London Waterloo stopping services via Ascot and was photographed in the 'two-faced' platform, also a rarity in itself, at Ascot on 5th December 1970.

I am indebted to "4SUB 4377" for the following information:
The corridor connection, crude though it was, was self-contained. When units were coupled, the two plates in the centre slid sideways and were held in position by tower bolts (unless the holes were filled with dirt, in which case they weren't held at all) and the faceplates were held in horizontal alignment by the clips on the vertical edges.
