Vulcan at Longbridge

A late 1960s view of the loco-shed at British Leyland (Austin-Morris) Ltd, Longbridge, with William Bagnall 0-6-0 saddle tank Vulcan (W/No.2994 of 1950) simmering between duties. It had been acquired, along with sister locomotive Victor, by the Austin Motor Co. Ltd, as a relatively new locomotive, from the Steel Company of Wales, Margam, in September 1957. They were equipped with self-cleaning smokeboxes, rocking grates, mechanical lubricators and Walschaerts valve gear. Main line railway infrastructure still survived here from the Halesowen and Northfield Railway, a GWR and MR joint line around which the works grew. This line had closed in 1964, but the stub into the works continued in use by both British Leyland and BR.
