20181119 4(E) FDR Memorial 5096

"Breadline" by George Segal. Bronze. Height: Tallest Figure (Center): 5' 9"; Installation Background 9' (height) x 11' (width)

Note: To capture the state of the country in midst of the Great Depression, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial includes bronze statutes — all by George Segal — to memorialize common citizens of the time affected by overwhelming poverty and despair. FDR often referred to Americans “at the bottom of the economic pyramid” as the “forgotten man.”

The line of five men outside a food kitchen in “Breadline” recreates a common occurrence in many U.S cities in the early 1930s. Many poverty-stricken and hungry Americans stood in long lines for free food provided by private charities and private individuals. The numbers of homeless and unemployed people often overwhelmed the charities that were giving out food. Friends of the sculptor George Segal posed for this sculpture including one who had stood in breadlines during the Great Depression.
