Note: To capture the state of the country in the midst of the Great Depression, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial includes bronze sculptures — all by George Segal — to memorialize common citizens of the time affected by overwhelming poverty and despair. This sculpture represents the rural poor. In the mid-1930s, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, farmers in America typically earned less than 25% of what construction workers or public school teachers were paid.
