Amtrak 337 WB Train 351, "The Wolverine" West of Mattawan Michigan

It's a bright, sunny day in southern Michigan as westbound Amtrak Train 351, the Wolverine, operating between Detroit and Chicago speeds by milepost 157.0, west of Mattawan, MI. Led by a cab car at the opposite end, (the train is actually going away from the camera) F40PH 337, (built September, 1980) trails seven cars on the rear.

Operating on the 97 mile Amtrak owned segment of track between Kalamazoo, MI on the east end and Porter, IN on the west, the train sprints across former Michigan Central trackage, (originally built in 1852) which was later absorbed by the New York Central, then Penn Central and finally Conrail.

Almost one year later from the date of the photo, on May 5, 1994, Amtrak extended the route of the Wolverine's east end from Detroit to Pontiac, Michigan. To service the extended route, new stations were constructed at Royal Oak, Troy and Pontiac.
