Dakota & Iowa DAIR GP-9's 23, 24 Big Sioux River Bridge Hawarden IA
Operating on former Milwaukee Road trackage now owned by the states of Iowa and South Dakota, a southbound DAIR, (locally known as the Dakota & Iowa), train crosses the Big Sioux River north of Hawarden, Iowa, March 24, 1994
With loads of rip-rap still needed to repair damage caused to the line by the 1993 midwest flooding, the train crosses the border, (Big Sioux River) between Iowa and South Dakota on a combination wooden trestle and classic iron through truss bridge.
Led by two GP9's, both of Northern Pacific heritage, the 23 was built in February, 1957 as NP 301 which later became BN 1739 and the 24 which was built in February, 1956 as NP 258 and later became BN 1881.
