Pick & Mix - 2

Stagecoach in South Wales's Service X24 (Blaenavon-Varteg Hil-Pontypool-Cwmbran-Newport), operated by Cwmbran depot, used to receive a vehicle upgrade every few years - 14 new Alexander Dennis Pointer Darts were received in 2006, followed by 14 new Alexander Dennis Enviro300s in 2010 and then 15 new Alexander Dennis E30Ds to Gold specification arrived in 2015. However, nothing new has received since and the 2015 E30Ds, having been subsequently repainted into Local livery, remain the backbone of the service.

Matters were complicated by the closure of Blackwood depot in 2023 leading to Cwmbran assuming responsibility for Service 151 (Newport-Risca-Crosskeys-Newbridge-Blackwood), with vehicles interworking with the X24 at the Newport end. In addition, Service 23 (Newport-Cwmbran-Pontypool-Abergavenny-Hereford) has been thrown into the mix at the Newport end, leading to over 25 different vehicles appearing on Service X24 each day. These comprise the remaining 60-plate Alexander Dennis Enviro 300s, a handful of Alexander Dennis E20Ds, the former Gold specification E30Ds, several Alexander Dennis Enviro300-bodied Scania K230UDs and four Gold specification Alexander Dennis E20D MMCs.

Three of the 60-plate Enviro300s remain in service and 27689 is the only example so far to have received the Steel Blue corporate livery, having previously carried bespoke schemes for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and for the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023. This December 2025 shot was taken on Monmouth Road in Abergavenny when she was undertaking a Hereford to Newport working on Service 23, which would the see her appear in Blaenavon on Service X24 about three hours later.
